Nov. 5th, 2008 12:22 am Wow.

Cross-posted from my Xanga, in case there's anybody here that doesn't go there...

Yeah, that about covers it.

WOW.

About quarter 'til 11, a thought occurred to me, which I shared with Sarah, and it was this:

As he grows up, Brayden will never know a world in which a black president was only for fiction.

It's those kinds of realizations that bring your mind to a full stop at times.

Sep. 30th, 2008 12:56 pm Is it just me?

Cross-posted from my Xanga...

From
CNN,
Conservatives to McCain camp: Let Palin be Palin

Buried far within that article is the following sentence:

"
In defense, Republicans say the complaints are coming from "intellectual" conservatives -- not Main Street Republicans, who they insist love the "hockey mom," from Alaska, as Palin describes herself."

Now, maybe it's just me, but doesn't that roughly translate to "rational, thinking people don't like her, but the majority of our idiot constituents think she's pretty great"?

I'd love to see the quote that formed the basis for that sentence, to see whether anything was lost in translation or taken out of context. Given the tactics of four years ago, painting John Kerry as "too intellectual", I'm kind of doubting it.

May. 16th, 2008 03:49 pm Bikes + Photography = Fun

So here's my fun little project for the summer...
Canon A570IS + CHDK + Unlimited Interval Shooting + DIY Bike Handelbar Mount + 8GB SDHC = Michigander at 4FPM

Essentially, the plan is to mount the camera to the front of my bike, set the intervalometer to shoot every 15 seconds, hop on every morning and ride. I figure with the ~310 miles that the Michigander will run, I should end up with roughly 6000 frames of data (shooting at 3MP) once you take sag stops into account, well under the ~8500 the card should hold. Once I get home, I'll stitch them all together... at 24FPS, that would mean that an average day's ride (45 miles) should compress down to about 40 seconds worth of video. I'll be doing some test runs over the course of the next month or so, and posting the results. Depending on how the early tests go, I might turn up the interval and turn down the resolution to 2MP... that size would afford me nearly 13K shots, meaning that I could shoot as fast as every 8 seconds and still come in under the wire, assuming that the batteries held up each day.

Nov. 5th, 2007 12:06 pm Whoa.

It's amazing how much cool stuff starts showing up when you get close to having a baby. Late last week, we got a big box o' goodies from the wunnerful [info]mistressmousey, including some of her "private label" goods, that we'll be able to use alongside the lovely onesies we got from [info]jinx213. And then this morning, I arrive at work, and I'll just copy this in from my Xanga site...

Some background information: A number of years ago, before the birth of our friend Dave's daughter, Steve and I commissioned a piece from artist Mike Deodato at a comicon we were attending. Specifically, it was of Superman and Lois Lane cradling a baby, since Dave was a big Supes fan. We sprung it on Dave after leaving the con, and he was pretty much speechless. Flash forward a handful of years, and I arrive in the office to find this sitting on my desk, from Steve's foray to a con over the weekend:

(The quality's of the picture's not the greatest, this was taken on my cell phone shortly after arrival.) Wow. Just, wow. The artist, in case you're wondering, is Mark Bloodworth, who I commissioned a sketch of Havok at one of last year's cons, very similar to this one. I'll be hunting around the house for a frame and matting as soon as I get home, I can guarantee you that much.

Yeah, the people I know rock.

Apr. 12th, 2007 12:11 pm Just one of those things...

So, the chances are I won't be posting too much around here, although I may use it as a place for things that I want to keep REALLY quiet (i.e. off of my Xanga page), but I figured I'd at least put a post up to link to a few of my more normal haunts...
